Tofukuji Samurai Machiya

Located about 500 m from the large Zen complex Tofukuji Temple, in a quiet residential Japanese traditional neighborhood, “Tofukuji Samurai Machiya” is a large, newly renovated house combining old traditional Kyoto Machiya style with luxurious modern facilities and comfort.

Our concept remains “Old Traditional Machiya feel — yes, but with Modern Comfort”.  Indeed, in Japan, old traditional townhouses (Machiya) are not very comfortable and this is the reason most young Japanese people prefer to live in an apartment. Yes, old Japanese houses are actually very cold in winter and quite hot during the summer. The space of these old houses is often divided into smaller rooms and passages that are quite dark. We have open both the space and the volume of the house.

It now features one large living space englobing the dining room and the living room, together with a new fully equipped open kitchen located on the side. We find this design more comfortable and more in line with today lifestyle.   

“Tofukuji Machiya” is a large house (about 125 m2/1,1340 sq ft) that has recently been fully renovated — It opened to the public on April 1st, 2016.

Everything has been planned and designed for the comfort and convenience of larger groups (spacious enough for up to 9 people).

Conveniently located next to Tofukuji train station, one stop away from Kyoto’s main train station, this large house is perfect to experience and enjoy the traditional lifestyle of the people of Kyoto in full modern comfort and luxury.

 

 

The walls, the floor and the ceiling have been fully insulated, and for optimal comfort in winter, we installed floor heating or western style radiators around the whole house.  Of course, all the rooms have air conditioning.  The lighting has been entirely renewed for a better general atmosphere. The whole place has been decorated with various old traditional Japanese art-crafts.

The house features two Western-style bedrooms with double and single beds (and a sofa bed, if necessary) and three Japanese tatami mat bedrooms (sleeping on futon). In the large LDK, living dining kitchen room, we have a living area with a coach, a coffee table and a large flat panel HDTV, a long dining table for up to 10 persons, and a fully equipped modern kitchen.
On the ground floor, the house features a traditional wooden bathroom with a bathtub/shower and a shower room upstairs. There are two toilets, one on each floor. The house is also equipped with a fully automatic All-In-One Washer / Dryer.

Everything has been designed to be pleasant and very convenient for larger groups (equipped and spacious enough for up to 9 people).

As our guests, you have unlimited access to super fast (optical fiber) internet access via Wi-Fi throughout the house. And you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited movies with Netflix, BBC, NHK, or FoxNews with the large (52 in) flat panel HDTV.
