Date of Stay May 2015
This house was beautiful, we absolutely loved it! It has been decorated to such a high standard with lots of lovely traditional touches. We travelled with our young family so it was great for us to have a little extra space to move around, and the kitchen and washing facilities were very useful. Akiko kindly sent lots of information about Kyoto before we left, and told us about a local event during our stay.
The location was great, in a nice quiet area, but Kiyomizu Gojo station only a few minutes walk away. We walked up to Kiyomizudera from here, to Sanjisangendo and also to Gion and the shopping area between Sanjo and Shijo, so there is a lot of places within walking distance.
There was, unfortunately, a problem with the site when booking, we had to request to book a few times, and when it finally went through I hadn’t noticed that it was only for 2 people (although in our communications we said it was for 4). This meant that when we arrived there were only 2 beds available for the 4 of us. Akiko very quickly and kindly helped us out with this so we could get the two futon beds, however we did feel that the 10,000 Yen fee for the extra bedding was extremely high.
Despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Machiya, it was a magical experience for all of us and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kyoto.
