Introduction to Kyoto

Kyoto is the ancient capital of Japan and the cultural and historical heart of the country. It is the best place to enjoy the beauty of Japan, its culture, its people, and its numerous traditional Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines with their beautiful gardens and treasures. It is the best place to encounter geisha and maiko, attend various festivals, and discover excellent restaurants and amazing shops. In short, Kyoto is the most interesting and rewarding destination in all of Japan.

There is so much to see and do in Kyoto, that it is difficult to know where to begin.  Here are a few recommended websites to get you started.

If you want to see a few photos of various aspects of Kyoto, have a look at:

For a website dedicated to Japan in general, I highly recommend you to check out “Japan Experience” website

General tourism

One of the best websites is the one from the city of Kyoto, The Kyoto City Official Travel Guide.  I think it is a must-read for all the visitors to Kyoto, first-timers and old-timers.

I found What’s up in Kyoto a great source of information about what’s up while you are in Kyoto. Exhibitions, festivals, events, you name it, it’s all in!

And then, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is another interesting site to get to know Japan, its culture, and much more.

If you’re planning to visit one of the Imperial Villa or Palace, here’s the website you’ll need: Imperial Household Agency

If you’re looking for a tour guide, I’d recommend Keiko san. She’s great as a cooking instructor (kids love her) and as a private tour guide.  Greg is another excellent choice as an English-speaking private tour guide. And for more options and suggestions about tours and experiences while in Kyoto, have a look at the Get Your Guide site and the Context site.

Eateries for the foodies

Visit this webpage on our site for a few suggestions and for links to four sites for restaurants from where you’ll be able to select where to eat and make a reservation.
