We all need access to the internet while traveling, but our home providers don’t always provide it for free (or at a reasonable cost) in foreign countries. Nowadays, for foreign traveler in Japan, there are two options for having one’s own internet connection.

The first, and maybe easiest option, is to get an eSIM and install it in your current smartphone (if it is a recent model). An eSIM is a digital version of the physical SIM card, identifying your device virtually to provide a network connection. It’s programmable remotely via software and is built into newer smartphones, meaning you wouldn’t have to purchase a new SIM card if you wanted to swap phones or wireless carriers. One of the advantages of the eSIM is that you can purchase it anywhere since the process can be completed online. There is no need to go anywhere to pick it up or wait for its delivery. It can be used immediately after setup, so it’s perfect for urgent needs. If you need more data, you can recharge it online anytime. It’s probably the best option for a single traveler.

After clicking on the button above, click on the first item of the menu on the upper right (日本語) and select English.

Confirm your selection by clicking on the right option (変更).

Once you’ve set the English language, click “Store” on the upper right menu and continue the process.

The second option is to get a WiFiBox. This is perfect for a small group of travelers as the internet access can be shared. There are various plans, depending on the length of your trip and the amount of data you’ll need.

You’ll have to reserve your device and pick it up upon your arrival in Japan. You’ll drop it off when you leave the country. There is a large number of places such as airports, train stations, shops, hotels, etc. where you can either pick up your WiFiBOX or drop it off.

By using either of the above buttons “Get more info” and links, you’ll get a discount from the regular price and a friend of us will get a small commission. This will not cost you anything.

Note

If you have any questions about anything concerning either of these options, please contact the company. I have not used these devices and these were only recommended to me by a friend.
