I know, we’re in the best place in the world to enjoy the best Japanese food there is, so why am I writing about an Italian restaurant? Well, Japanese food is not for everyone, and may not be for all the time. Once in a while, one may crave for something else, for a good pizza or a nice plate of pasta, for example. And in such case, Il Pappalardo is probably one of the best option you can have in Kyoto.
The place is not very large and it may be better to reserve (we’ve been there a couple of times and couldn’t get a table). They have a fairly large selection of Italian dishes, great salads, excellent pasta, and really good pizza (cooked with wood fire in a real pizza oven). Their wine selection is limited to Italian, but they do have some really nice ones.
So after a few days of fabulous Japanese food, if you really fancy something simple and tasty in a different way, this could be a good option. As usual in Japan, their lunch is a much better value!
