Gion's Hanami-koji street by night, Kyoto

Friends are visiting us and we had a great dinner together next to the Yasaka Shrine in Gion.  As you may know, Gion is Kyoto’s most famous geisha district.  It is filled with shops, restaurants and is a great place to spend an evening.

The most popular area of Gion is definitely the Hanami-koji Street from Shijo Avenue to Kenninji Temple. A nice place for a walk and a great (and expensive) place to try a local restaurant in one of the numerous preserved machiya houses that now function as restaurants, serving Kyoto style kaiseki ryori (Japanese haute cuisine) and other types of local meals.  It is also a good place to spot Geiko and Maiko walking to their work ast one of the many Ochaya or Tea Housed.
