Thanks to its location, the Gojozaka Machiya is a perfect starting point to visit Kyoto.
As mentioned elsewhere, we think that Kyoto is a great city for moving around on bicycle. But this is certainly not for everyone, and certainly not all the time. We often take a cab for a short ride — indeed, as you pay the same price for one or up to four passagers, taxi can at time be cheaper than the bus (yen 230 per person) or the train. You’ll have no problem finding a taxi right in front of the house.
When it comes to public transportation, we’re fortunate to have two bus stops within 1 minute walk from the house, one to go South, and another one across the street, to go North.
Umamachi Bus Stop is where buses #202, #206 and #207 stop. These will enable you to go to the Kyoto main train station, to the South toward Tofuku-ji Temple and Toji Temple, and to the North toward Kiyomizu Temple, Gion Area. A couple of min south of this bus stop, you’ll reach the Higashiyama Nanajo Bus Stop where you can get on the Raku bus #100 that goes all the way up to Ginkakuji Temple.
Please, refer to the city bus map.
Using the bus to visit Kyoto is probably the least expensive way to move around. You can just buy a Day Pass Card. It costs a mere yen 500 and will enable you to take any city bus as many times as you want during one day.
There is also a train station within 10 minutes from the house, Kiyomizu-Gojo station where you can ride the Keihan line. See below.
