Toji Machiya

Located 300 m from the famous Toji Temple, in a quiet neighborhood, “Toji Machiya” is an old traditional Kyoto Machiya  featuring luxurious modern facilities and comfort.

The old wooden townhouse has been entirely rebuilt and redesigned from the ground up, with both traditional and modern material. As with our other machiya, special attention was paid to create another ideal place to be used as a base for the visit of Kyoto.  Here, you will be able to experience the traditional lifestyle of the people of Japan’s old imperial capital and enjoy a unique cultural experience, with all the modern comfort one can wish for.
Our concept remains “Old Traditional Machiya — yes, but with Modern Comfort”.  Indeed, in Japan, old traditional townhouses (Machiya) are actually very cold in winter and quite hot during the summer. The space of these old houses is divided into smaller rooms and passages that are quite dark. We have open both the space and the volume of the house. It now features one large living space englobing the dining room and the living room, together with a new fully equipped open kitchen located on the side. We find this design more comfortable and more in line with today lifestyle.

The walls, the floor and the ceiling have been fully insulated, and for optimal comfort in winter, we installed floor heating or western style radiators around the whole house.  Of course, all the rooms have air conditioning.   The whole place has been decorated with various old traditional Japanese art-crafts.

At the end, an old stairs-box leads to the loft bedroom with two single beds (mattress).   The living room opens to a “dry” tsuboniwa (courtyard garden) with shôji (paper doors) that can be half open on the lower part.  At the end, a small corridor brings you to the laundry room, the modern cypress bathroom that opens to the garden, and the toilet. The house uses old sliding wooden doors (some are the original ones found in the house) and “Shoji and Fusuma” paper doors and windows for a real traditional Japanese atmosphere.
